Reading this article, “Reputation is Dead”, it reminds me of having a conversation with someone the Linux User Group in Beijing a few years ago.
In the article, the author talked about the difficulty in managing and controlling one’s online reputation, and how there are online services that help people to manage their reputations.
The article also talks about the future of reputation management, that as a society we will progress. When we are checking out someone, we will accept that there will be crazy photos on Facebook, and that people will make mistake. It is important to know where the sources come from – if it’s hard proof, i.e. criminal records, non-anonymous and clear statements of wrong doing, then that will be something that can be addressed.
Hence, having a reputable background in order to give out weight to make the accused accountable.
The resemblance of the chat with the Chinese friend, was that there needs to be a standardized reputation report system. For example, if you are freelancing and working on outsourcing jobs, these jobs can be transferred as a skills or reputation points when being transferred to another job, or even for interviewing for a large corporation. Conversely, the same is true that if you work in a large corporation, the skills and reputation needs to be standardized also, in order for you to transfer your skills and experience to another job.
This allows clients and employers to see how the different path of how you achieved the skill sets they would hire you for.
The reputation report system can also work with marketers, restaurant critics, etc. This way, people who are reading the reviews will have a much better idea of the quality of the reviews.
P.S. a good reading at Wikipedia regarding Reputation Systems
